This face wash recipe has been a staple in our home for years. Friends and family loved it so much that I created a boosted version: our No. 18 Calming Lavender Face Wash. It provides a traditional cleanse without over drying and leaves skin feeling cleaner than a conventional face wash. Make your own at home with three simple ingredients- recipe & more about the ingredients below.
THE Recipe:
Yield: 8 oz.
7 Tbsp Liquid Castile Soap
5 Tbsp Vegetable Glycerin
3 Tbsp Raw Honey
Directions:
-Combine ingredients in a medium sized bowl
-Mix together until combined and honey is disolved
-Transfer to flip cap or pump bottle (you can reuse or purchase one), using a funnel
Where to Buy:
-It is easiest to use scented Liquid Castile Soap. I recommend Dr. Bronner’s Lavender, Rose, or Tea Tree.
If you use unscented Castile Soap, you can add Essential Oils, I recommend Aura Cacia brand’s Lavender, Geranium, Rose, or Tea Tree. Only add 2-4 drops. For very sensitive skin, skip the Essential Oils.
We don't recommend using essential oils while pregnant or nursing.
About the Ingredients:
Liquid Castile Soap has historically been made from olive oil and sodium hydroxide (or saponified olive oil, aka liquid castile soap). Today that definition has widened to include other botanical oils (coconut, sunflower) saponified with either sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. It is one of the gentlest liquid soaps in existence and very little goes a long way. I recommend Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap, as other brands may contain unnecessary additives. Opt for Dr. Bronner’s Lavender or Rose Castile Soap.
Vegetable Glycerin is a sugar-alcohol produced by isolating fats from plants (palm, soy, or coconut) through hydrolysis. It is naturally humectant: it keeps moisture from leaving the skin while simultaneously drawing moisture from the air to keep cells hydrated. Glycerin helps balance the castile soap's slight drying effect. We recommend Now Foods Vegetable Glycerin.
Raw + Unfiltered Honey* is antibacterial, clearing up current blemishes and helping to prevent new ones. It is naturally humectant, attracting and retaining moisture to the skin, and its anti-inflammatory nature will calm agitated skin: soothing and alleviating redness. We recommend YS Eco Bee Farms Raw Honey for its perfect consistency, or Really Raw Honey.
*Honey must be raw and unfiltered to achieve results; processed honey will not benefit your skin, and likely make it worse.
*If you are vegan or sensitive to bee products, you can substitute Aloe Vera Gel for the raw honey, and you will get the same skin-softening + hydrating benefits, but with a thinner consistency. Use Lily of the Desert’s Aloe Vera Gel.
